Sharing Good Practice
Placemark your school in Google Earth and start everywhere you visit from the school. Use the Google Earth Community Education selection to find links to units of work (eg A Village in
India) and Panaramio pictures to look at what the landscape looks like at places visited. You can also play video clips from Planet Earth at some locations.
I have created websites for S3/4 research projects to save trawling through search engines and inappropriate sites. It used forms so pupils could also add links to it allowing them to share websites that were useful. It also contained a number of focuses for their research which meant that there was very little in the way of irrelevant information added to notes.
Pupils evaluating websites – developing their own criteria
Hyper link from school website to school blog for class news
Meet with interested colleagues within the school on a monthly basis to share useful sites, programs, successful lessons, problems etc.
Podcast homework and study notes, accessible to most students at home any time.
Worked with French Partner school pupils (getting to know you) by our pupils taking photos with digital camera, cutting face in half in photoshop. French pupils had to draw in the other half of the face.
Art Activity P3/4Pupils gathered fallen leaves from the playground and discussed their observations. They then took close ups using a digital camera, downloaded them and then looked at them on the whiteboard. Pupils began to see more detail. Then we looked at them through a digital microscope. Because the children could see the leaves on the large screen they were increasingly able to see more detail. Pupils then drew the leaves while the images were flashed on the screen. The children produced excellent drawings far more detailed than I would normally expect from children of this age.
Podcasting for international links
Use the interactive body link in bbc online to enhance pupil learning of the organs and organ systems in the body.
Carried out work on integrating digital video within an integrated teaching learning and assessment curricular driven teachers package within the history curricular. The aim of this is to utilise the virtual learning experience of higher education within schools. This has benefits for pupils teachers and can allow management to use resources available to them in a much more cost effective and output driven manner.
Set up templates for classroom admin. as mail merge documents. Things like jotter labels, name badges and even reports take half the time.
(Takes a long time to set up, admittedly, but worth it.)
Having a challenge ICT task beside computer for each child to tackle
Interactive voting systems to encourage competitive revision
Have used an iPod to help create a talking story book in two languages to help EAL children.
All pupils studying Int2, H and AH Physics are required to produce their LO3 experimental reports electronically, using Word for text and Excel for tables of data and graphs. This enables easier editing to achieve a satisfactory final report and also allows pupils to share and constructively criticise each others efforts.
I was involved in developing an electronic means of writing a ‘book report’ using Microsoft Publisher, about 4 years ago. – With the advance in ICT now, it would be great to turn that into an up to date interactive web-based version.
I’ve been converting paper based resources to digitally accessible versions for pupils with ASN, using Mediator Software (in particular, Heinemann Maths) This work was the subject of a recent article in a NAACE publication on ICT and Inclusion.
I’ve also been producing ‘Show and Tell’ walkthroughs of software for training purposes using Screencorder with Mediator and simple ASN / primary software to suit switch access, touchscreen or whiteboard.
I really want to get into games and games development. It’s what the pupils are into and it would attract more pupils to my subject. Have just ordered a site licence for www.gamemaker.nl
Use a data logger with a light sensor in a shoe box for investigations when using concept cartoons about light.
A work in progress – should go live on Tuesday 23rd February but not all features yet on.Worked with P7 classes to produce young heritage web pages linking young people to the wider community. Ideas include podcasts, blogs, streaming video, polls, games, competitions, heritage trails – all created by the children, facilitated by the teacher and developed by the webmaster. Superclubs web site also allowed initial hosting which was transferred to the historical site.www.stonehaven-heritage.org.uk
Advertise a class enterprise by filming an advert using Digital Blue Movie Camera and show at school assembly.
Using a Digital Blue Camera the children recorded other mixed ability groups when they presented Environmental Studies talks on Endangered animals to the class. The talks were then played back using a SMART Board and Windows Media Player. The class watched them and individual groups were able to peer/ self assess themselves on voice, clarity, body language, audience awareness etc… in preparation for individual class talks in term 4.
Have found using the Digital Blue Microscope for mini beasts with P3/4 excellent. Using the Microscope as a scanner and children inserting ‘their’ mini beast into a power point presentation was very popular!
Using Digital Movie Creators to video our Carnival Parade Floats which was our technology topic for the term
Using Powerpoint to get children to teach a topic to their peers and provide notes for other pupils on that topic.
I try to make ICT relevant to the topics which are currently being covered in the classroom.
I like to use a talking photo album to capture special events in my class. I recently went on a school trip to a museum and of course the digital camera came with me! After the trip I inserted the photos into the talking photo album and asked each child in the class to record a special message onto each page. The talking photo album was then sent home with each child for 1 night so that they could share their memories of the school trip with their parents.
When I moved schools I lost the use of my Smartboard. I have now downloaded the Smartboard software onto my laptop and am using a graphics tablet and projector so I can still use the lessons I have previously prepared.
Punctuating story from Abernet NL Writing examples
Use ‘Newsround’ programmes from website for notetaking, current affairs etc.
Space on Wired Shire for sharing IWB activities
Using 3 above, pupils then plan out, draw and explain the best layout for a refugee camp in time of crisis
Use of the digital movie creator to film eg science experiments, link to smartboard and use for discussion, self and peer assessment
Make a cartoon with DigiBlue cameras
Sonic postcards – using iRivers to record and Audacity to edit and produce a sound bite representing Inverurie. Adapting to create sounds for other projects.
I have used Bee Bots to help children learn mapping skills and grid references.
Using a blog to provide pupils with an opportunity to discuss and resolve issues that arise as part of their course.
Show a slideshow of downloaded images of paintings by one artist for pupils to vote for before using one painting as a springboard fro their own artwork.A number of delegates were brave enough to share an idea or a website when they registered for the conference. I put a few together into a powerpoint presentation which was running as you came into the Assembly Hall. Download the file to be inspired! It will take some time to download.
I will work away this week posting the websites and ideas delegates shared. Please add to, edit or comment on the list.
Let’s begin the sharing process!
